M51: X-Rays from the Whirlpool

COSMIC MESSAGE

The Chandra X-ray Observatory recently X-rayed the entire Whirlpool Galaxy, M51. This image combines Chandra's X-ray data with visible light from the Hubble Space Telescope. Hundreds of luminous X-ray sources, likely neutron star and black hole binary systems, are visible within the galaxy.
