The Iris Nebula in a Field of Dust
NASA APOD · Mikel Martnez
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Iris Nebula, NGC 7023, is a reflection nebula in a field of dark dust. Its striking blue color comes from light from the star SAO 19158 reflecting off dense dust. Blue light is preferentially reflected, similar to how Earth's sky appears blue. The surrounding dust has a brown tint, partly due to photoluminescence.
