V838 Light Echo: The Movie
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
V838 Monocerotis, a star that suddenly became one of the brightest in the Milky Way, created this light echo. For unknown reasons, the star flared, then faded a few months later. Unlike a supernova or nova, which expels material, this movie shows light from the outburst reflecting off surrounding dust shells, expanding outwards over time.
