Peculiar Elliptical Galaxy Centaurus A

NASA APOD · Roberto Colombari
COSMIC MESSAGE

Centaurus A, or NGC 5128, is an elliptical galaxy with unusual, dramatic dust lanes across its center. These lanes are so thick they almost completely obscure the galaxy's core in visible light. This is peculiar because elliptical galaxies typically have little dark dust. Centaurus A also contains an active galactic nucleus.
