Comet Lovejoy before a Globular Star Cluster

NASA APOD · Dieter Willasch
COSMIC MESSAGE

A newly visible comet, Lovejoy, passes in front of the globular cluster M79. The comet glows green, a sign of diatomic carbon gas fluorescing in the sunlight. M79 is about 40,000 light-years away in the constellation Lepus, while Comet Lovejoy is much closer, a dirty iceberg from the outer solar system.
