Hickson Compact Group 87, or HCG 87, is a small group of galaxies slowly destroying themselves. Their mutual gravity stretches them as they orbit a common center over 100 million years. This pulling creates colliding gas, which triggers bursts of star formation. This process also feeds matter into their active galactic nuclei.
