M31: The Andromeda Galaxy

NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE

Andromeda, also known as M31, is the closest major galaxy to our own Milky Way. It is thought to look much like our own galaxy, and together they dominate the Local Group of galaxies. The diffuse light comes from hundreds of billions of stars, though the distinct stars in the foreground are within our own galaxy.
