Eclipsed in Southern Skies

NASA APOD · Yuri Beletsky
COSMIC MESSAGE

This panorama from the Carnegie Las Campanas Observatory shows the central Milky Way over the Magellan telescopes. The most striking feature is the deep red glow of the Moon during a total lunar eclipse. The Moon, immersed in Earth's shadow, reflects the scattered and refracted light of sunsets and sunrises from Earth's atmosphere. This event occurred during a perigee-total-lunar eclipse.
