The Lagoon Nebula in Hydrogen, Sulfur, and Oxygen

NASA APOD · John Nemcik
COSMIC MESSAGE

The majestic Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8, is a region of hot gas and a nursery for many young stars. It spans 100 light-years across and is about 5,000 light-years distant in the constellation Sagittarius. The open cluster NGC 6530, which formed in the nebula only a few million years ago, contains many bright stars. The nebula gets its name from the dark lane of dust that runs through it.
