A Force from Empty Space: The Casimir Effect

NASA APOD · Umar Mohideen (U. California at Riverside)
COSMIC MESSAGE

This tiny ball, just over a tenth of a millimeter across, demonstrates the Casimir Effect. It moves toward a smooth plate because of energy fluctuations in the vacuum of empty space. This phenomenon, named for its discoverer, provides evidence for the universe's continued expansion. It shows us how empty space is not empty.
