Colliding Galaxies in Stephan's Quintet

NASA APOD · Jose Jimenez Priego
COSMIC MESSAGE

These two spiral galaxies, NGC 7318a and NGC 7318b, are colliding within Stephan's Quintet. The Hubble Space Telescope captured this image as they distort each other gravitationally. Such collisions can trigger bursts of star formation and eventually merge the galaxies into one.
