Voyager 1 captured this view of Io against Jupiter's swirling clouds in 1979. The images were taken from about 8.3 million kilometers away. Io's surface shows curious round features with dark centers and bright rims, over 60 kilometers across. These features are now understood to be volcanic in origin.
