COSMIC MESSAGE

This infrared image from the Herschel Space Observatory shows M42, the Orion Nebula, a large star-forming region 1,500 light-years away. Cold, dense filaments of dust, otherwise dark in visible light, appear in reddish hues. These filaments contain bright spots where protostars are collapsing.
