NGC 4696: Filaments around a Black Hole
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Long tendrils of gas and dust snake out from the center of elliptical galaxy NGC 4696. The Hubble Space Telescope captured these filaments, which appear to connect to the supermassive black hole at the galaxy's core. Astronomers think the black hole's energy outflow pushes these cooler structures away.
