Thirty years ago, in 1987, the brightest supernova in recent history was observed in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Supernova 1987A is surrounded by curious outer rings that appear as a flattened figure eight. The Hubble Space Telescope monitors these rings, but their origin remains a mystery. The object at the center is what remains of the violent stellar explosion.
