Total Solar Eclipse of 1979

NASA APOD · Jimmy Westlake
COSMIC MESSAGE

The total solar eclipse of February 26, 1979, was the last one visible from the contiguous United States for many years. This telescopic image, taken from Riverton, Manitoba, Canada, shows the solar corona surrounding the New Moon. The path of totality crossed several US states and Canadian provinces. It captures the ethereal beauty of the corona against the darkened sky.
