Neptune, the farthest planet from the Sun, appears dark and ghostly in this near-infrared image from the James Webb Space Telescope. This is because its atmosphere contains methane, which absorbs infrared light. However, high-altitude clouds, which rise above most of the methane, stand out brightly, offering a detailed view of the ice giant's distant atmosphere.
