This composite image captures the Sun's flash spectrum during the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, from Madras, Oregon. Three exposures show the Sun's diamond ring effect at the beginning and end of totality, with the lunar disk silhouetted at maximum eclipse. A diffraction grating spreads the Sun's light into its constituent colors, revealing the emission lines from the chromosphere.
