COSMIC MESSAGE
Total solar eclipses are possible because the Moon's apparent size can just cover the Sun's disk. However, the Moon is slowly moving away from Earth, at about 1.5 inches per year. In approximately 600 million years, the Moon will be too far to ever completely cover the Sun, making only annular eclipses possible.
