The Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona, is usually hidden by the bright solar surface. Only during a total solar eclipse, when the Moon blocks the Sun, can we see its delicate streamers and structures. NASA's SOHO spacecraft, 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, can always monitor the corona, but for Earth-based observers, it's a rare treat.
