COSMIC MESSAGE
The Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, is visible above the southern horizon from Las Campanas Observatory. In the dark September skies of the Chilean Atacama desert, this small galaxy spans about 10 degrees. The sensitive digital camera also recorded a faint airglow, which is otherwise invisible to the eye.
