A strong solar event in September 2017 triggered an intense global aurora at Mars. Data from the MAVEN spacecraft's ultraviolet imaging spectrograph showed a sudden increase in ultraviolet emission. This Martian aurora was more than 25 times brighter than any previously detected by MAVEN.
