The Spiral North Pole of Mars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The North Pole of Mars features a distinctive spiral. Each winter, a one-meter-thick layer of frozen carbon dioxide forms over the permanent water-ice layer. Strong winds from above the cap's center, combined with the planet's spin, contribute to the spiral structure of Planum Boreum. This image is a perspective mosaic generated from multiple observations.
