NGC 613 in Dust, Stars, and a Supernova
This is a spiral galaxy, NGC 613, about 80 million light years away. In 2016, an amateur astronomer caught a supernova in its outer reaches, just as it was brightening. This image shows the galaxy, with the supernova captured in an inset. It was the earliest optical detection of a supernova caught in progress.
