Arcs, Jets, and Shocks near NGC 1999

NASA APOD · Mark Hanson; Annotation: Sakib Rasool (StarSurfin)
COSMIC MESSAGE

This array of nebulae and stars is about two degrees south of the famous Orion Nebula. The region is full of energetic young stars producing jets and outflows. These push through the surrounding material at hundreds of kilometers per second. The interaction creates luminous shock waves known as Herbig-Haro objects. The graceful, flowing arc just right of center is HH 222, also called the Waterfall Nebula.
