Colorful Airglow Bands Surround Milky Way

The sky glows like a giant repeating rainbow due to airglow. Airglow is always present, but usually faint. Disturbances, like an approaching storm, can create noticeable ripples, or gravity waves, in the atmosphere. Red airglow comes from OH molecules about 87 kilometers high, excited by ultraviolet light from the Sun, while orange and green airglow has different origins.
