COSMIC MESSAGE

Looking south over the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds float above a volcanic peak. These dwarf galaxies are satellites of our own Milky Way, named after Ferdinand Magellan. The Large Magellanic Cloud is 180,000 light-years away, and the Small is about 200,000 light-years distant.
