North Star: Polaris and Surrounding Dust
NASA APOD · Bray Falls
COSMIC MESSAGE
Polaris is called the North Star because it is the nearest bright star toward Earth's north spin axis. As Earth turns, other stars appear to revolve around Polaris, but Polaris itself always stays in the same northerly direction. Thousands of years ago, Earth's spin axis pointed in a slightly different direction, making Vega the North Star.
