COSMIC MESSAGE
The Pencil Nebula, NGC 2736, is a shock wave plowing through space at over 500,000 kilometers per hour. These thin, bright, braided filaments are long ripples in a cosmic sheet of glowing gas seen nearly edge-on. It's about five light-years long and 800 light-years away. This nebula is only a small part of the Vela supernova remnant.
