Mars in the Loop

NASA APOD · Tunc Tezel
COSMIC MESSAGE

Mars doesn't actually reverse its orbit, but from Earth, it appears to move backward across the sky for a time. This is called retrograde motion. This composite image shows Mars's path from late April to early November 2018. The red planet's apparent loop is a reflection of Earth's faster orbit catching up to and passing Mars.
