COSMIC MESSAGE
The Earth's dark, inner shadow is called the umbra, and it is shaped like a cone extending into space. Its circular cross-section is most visible during a lunar eclipse. On January 21, the Full Moon slid across the northern half of Earth's umbral shadow, remaining completely within the umbra for 63 minutes.
