NASA APOD · Robert Eder
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 6302, also known as the Butterfly Nebula, spans over 3 light-years. Its central star, exceptionally hot at 250,000 degrees Celsius, is hidden from direct view by a dense dust torus. The Hubble Space Telescope captured this sharp close-up in 2009. This planetary nebula is a beautiful example of a dying star shedding its outer layers.
