The Milky Way arches over the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, also known as El Castillo, in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. This impressive step-pyramid stands 30 meters tall and 55 meters wide at its base. Near an equinox, the pyramid's shadows create an illusion of a slithering viper descending its steps. This astronomical alignment was observed by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization.
