Ares 3 Landing Site: The Martian Revisited

This close-up image from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE camera shows weathered craters and windblown deposits. The region is in southern Acidalia Planitia, a location featured in the science fiction novel, The Martian. While the image shows striking blue tones, to the human eye, the surface would likely appear gray or reddish. No human has seen this terrain in person, only through the eyes of our robotic explorers.
