Lightning over the Volcano of Water

Lightning is a rapid electrical discharge that occurs within some clouds, heating a thin column of air to about three times the Sun's surface temperature. Updrafts within these clouds cause collisions between ice and snow, separating charges between cloud tops and bottoms. This image shows a lightning storm over the Volcano of Water, a common name for a stratovolcano in Guatemala.
