M27: Not a Comet

NASA APOD · Bob Franke
COSMIC MESSAGE

Messier 27, also known as the Dumbbell Nebula, is a planetary nebula, the glowing remains of a sun-like star. Charles Messier discovered it in the 18th century, adding it to his list of objects that were definitely not comets. It appears round and planet-like in a small telescope, but it is a gaseous emission nebula, about 1,360 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula.
