COSMIC MESSAGE
October 20, 2014, was a calm day on Mars, the day after it had a close encounter with Comet Siding Spring. The comet passed within 86,700 miles of Mars, about a third of the Earth-Moon distance. Earth's spacecraft and rovers on Mars were safe, observing the comet's passage. This was a real celestial event, unlike the fictional Martian invasion from the 1938 radio drama based on H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds."
