M101 is a large spiral galaxy, almost twice the size of our Milky Way at 170,000 light-years across. It was one of the original spiral nebulae observed by Lord Rosse's 19th-century telescope. This multiwavelength view is a composite of images from space-based telescopes. M101 is one of the last entries in Charles Messier's catalog.
