IC 405: The Flaming Star Nebula

NASA APOD · Eric Coles
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Flaming Star Nebula, IC 405, gets its name from its rippling dust and gas lanes. The hot, blue star AE Aurigae, visible to the left, ionizes the surrounding gas. When electrons recombine with protons, red light is often emitted, shown here in orange. The purple regions are a mix of this red light and blue light reflected by the dust.
