M13: The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules
NASA APOD · Eric Coles
COSMIC MESSAGE
In 1716, astronomer Edmond Halley described M13 as "a little Patch" visible to the naked eye on a clear, moonless night. Today, it is known as the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, one of the brightest globular star clusters in the northern sky. This sharp telescopic view reveals hundreds of thousands of stars. The cluster is 25,000 light-years away, with its stars crowded into a region 150 light-years across.
