A century ago, astronomers debated the size of the universe. Many believed the Milky Way was the entire universe, while others thought it was one of many galaxies. Edwin Hubble settled the debate a few years later. He observed a variable star in the Andromeda Nebula, proving it was a separate galaxy far beyond our own.
