M81 and M82 are two galaxies locked in a gravitational dance, twelve million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. M81 is a grand spiral galaxy with bright arms and a yellow core. M82 is an irregular galaxy, marked by red gas and dust clouds, both profoundly affected by a billion years of close encounters.
