The massive active region AR 3664, which caused recent auroras, is seen here at the Sun's edge. This perspective shows its three-dimensional structure. A large, multi-pronged solar prominence extends into space, a cloud of particles ejected from this violent region. The Earth could easily fit beneath this extended prominence, captured two days ago.
