COSMIC MESSAGE

These brief, mysterious flashes, known as red sprites, were captured by a sensitive video camera above the Vosges mountains in France. Generated over intense thunderstorms, these electrical breakdowns occur in the mesosphere, Earth's coldest atmospheric layer, between 50 and 100 kilometers up.
