The Great Nebula in Orion, also called M42, is the closest large star-forming region to Earth, about 1,500 light-years away. This image captures its glowing gas and hot, young stars. The nebula is about 40 light-years across, a stellar nursery at the edge of a vast interstellar molecular cloud.
