STEVE, or Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, appears as a bright streak of pink and purple light in the sky. Unlike auroras, STEVEs are distinct phenomena, though their exact origin is still under investigation. They are often accompanied by a picket fence-like green aurora, as seen here over Copper Harbor.
