M51: The Whirlpool Galaxy

NASA APOD · Josep Drudis
COSMIC MESSAGE

To find M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, locate the Big Dipper, then follow its handle away from the bowl to the last bright star. Slide your telescope slightly south and west to find this stunning pair of interacting galaxies, the 51st entry in Charles Messier's catalog. The larger galaxy, NGC 5194, has well-defined spiral arms and dust lanes that clearly sweep in front of its companion, NGC 5195. This galaxy is perhaps the original spiral nebula observed.
