A Filament Leaps from the Sun
NASA APOD · Stéphane Poirier
COSMIC MESSAGE
Sometimes, part of the Sun's atmosphere leaps into space due to changing magnetic fields. Regions with strong surface magnetism, called active regions, often have dark sunspots. These active regions channel charged gas along magnetic fields. This gas can fall back, escape, or even impact Earth. This time-lapse video shows one such filament leaping from the Sun.
