A Large Tsunami Shock Wave on the Sun

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

A massive tsunami-like shock wave, known as a Moreton wave, moved across the Sun in 2006. This event followed a large solar flare from an Earth-sized sunspot. The Optical Solar Patrol Network (OSPAN) telescope in New Mexico captured the wave as it expanded. This shock wave compressed and heated gases like hydrogen in the Sun's photosphere, briefly making them brighter.
