A nearby star has exploded in the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101, about 21 million light-years away. This supernova, SN 2023ixf, was discovered by astronomer Koichi Itagaki and is the closest one seen in the past five years. Telescopes worldwide are now monitoring this event, providing a rare opportunity to study a supernova in a relatively nearby galaxy.
